About Us

Southern Cross Kayaking has been established and is managed and operated by partners, Cindy and John.

“There’s nothing – absolutely nothing –

half so much worth doing

as simply messing about in boats.”

So said ‘Ratty’ to ‘Mole’ in Kenneth Grahame’s classic, The Wind in the Willows. John has been ‘messing about in boats’ since early childhood. In everything from inflatable kayaks, sailing ‘Sabots’, surf skis, canoes, whitewater kayaks and sea kayaks to cruising yachts and international yacht delivery, John has gained knowledge and experience in many areas relating to a variety of water sports.
John has held kayak/canoe instructor qualifications with the governing body, Australian Canoeing since 1997 and holds the following qualifications:

  • Flatwater Instructor Kayak and Canoe
  • Seakayak Level 2 Instructor
  • Whitewater Guide

John holds a Certificate IV Qualification in Tourism: Tour Directing, Managing and Guiding and has been engaged in on-water instruction and tour leading in a variety of roles and situations including regular instruction for canoe club members, guiding tour groups in commercial operations, guiding school groups in flat and whitewater environments, facilitation of Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme expeditions and instruction and assessment of Sport and Recreation Staff.

Planning a trip to Europe to catch up with friends and family in 2004, Cindy asked John to come along, he responded with the now famous words:

“ Do you think we can paddle there?”…

…and so began the seven month odyssey that saw them paddle 2,200 kms across 8 countries on the Danube River, as well as paddling in Gibraltar, The Netherlands, and Malaysia. Following that trip, Cindy undertook instructor training and in 2007 was qualified by Australian Canoeing as a:

  • Flat water Instructor Kayak and Canoe

Since then, Cindy has also been engaged in on-water instruction and tour leading in a variety of roles and situations including regular instruction for canoe club members, guiding tour groups in commercial operations, guiding school groups in flat and white water environments, and instruction /assessment of Sport and Recreation Staff.

Cindy and John paddle for recreation whenever possible too. They never tire of or cease to marvel at the fantastic waterways available to paddlers so close to Sydney, as well as in the rest of New South Wales and Australia. They have been fortunate enough to paddle waterways in most states of Australia and also in New Zealand, Vanuatu and the Greek Islands.

Cindy and John share a love of paddling, travel, the natural environment, and a passion for customer service. They have a vision to bring these skills and interests to Southern Cross Kayaking to provide safe, enjoyable outdoor experiences to clients utilising current techniques and best practices with regard to guiding and teaching procedures.
